Category: About Mauritius
If you're looking for a truly unique experience in Mauritius, walking across the lagoon to the desolate Ilot Fourneau during low tide is an adventure worth undertaking. With views of the stunning Le Morne Brabant, the feeling of walking in the water is surreal and is sure to be a highlight of your trip.
However, while the walk is not particularly difficult, it can be unnerving for some people. To make the journey as easy as possible, we recommend following the sandy, lighter colored trail visible from near the dock. Not only does this route help you avoid destroying coral and urchins, but it also helps to protect your feet. Wearing shoes is a good idea, and remember that there is virtually no shade along the way. If you need a break, there is a small sandy section on the beach where you can rest, lay out or enjoy a refreshing beer.
It's also important to note that the water at low tide (which is when you should aim to start your journey) does not go above a meter. You can even make it around the island with your possessions still dry. To ensure you're setting out at the right time, check the tidal information available at the Mauritius Meteorological Services.
The route itself is a loop and the starting and ending point is near the public pier in Le Morne Village. The length of the trail is 1.6 miles round trip and should take you around 1-1.5 hours to complete. The lowest point is at 0ft, and the highest point is at 10ft. To find the trail, simply start a few hundred feet west of the main dock in Le Morne and look for the storm water drain that exits under the road nearby. From there, head straight out from the shore and you should be able to spot the white trail leading towards the western end of the island.
As you make your way towards the island, be sure to watch your step. The water will become slightly deeper as you near the island, and the trail may become faint. Nevertheless, just head towards the west side, picking a route without coral or urchins, and enjoy the adventure. Walking around the island is easy in either direction, so take your time and keep an eye out for some of the interesting marine life that abounds. Once you've made your way around the island, simply return along the same route.
Exploring Ilot Fourneau is a unique experience that is not to be missed when visiting Mauritius. Remember to take the necessary precautions, wear appropriate footwear, and be mindful of the environment. With its stunning views and fascinating marine life, this is sure to be an adventure that you'll never forget.
